“Soon as I sell too much watch them turn on him” – Jay-Z
I know where it began, but am not quite sure where it will stop. Either way, the Lil Wayne hatred that exists throughout the NE region is at an all time high. Ever since the Carter III dropped in June 2008 Wayne has been more maligned and scrutinized than any other artist in the modern era. Since then it has become ever popular to say “Wayne hasn’t been hot since the Carter 2″ which couldn’t be more wrong (See I Am Not A Human Being, No Ceilings and Sorry 4 Da Wait as proof).
Due to his fame and immense popularity Wayne began to suffer from what is known as Jay-Z Syndrome where all your new work gets compared to your past classics. There was a time where ALL YOU HEARD in the streets of Philly and NY were Dedication 1 & 2, Carter 1 & 2 and Drought 3. I can remember when D3 dropped Q-Deezy said on The Come Up Show on Power 99 (back when that was a good show) that Wayne was on rapper island by himself because his music and output was so far ahead of everyone else in the game. While Kanye is routinely allowed to drop whatever the fuck he wants with a guarantee of dick sucks from the back and deliver weak bars that people go “OH SHIT” for as long as he puts that ACK-SAINT on em; Waynes verses and content are routinely dissected like a frog in 9th grade biology by lyrical accountants™ (@Wayno119) who crave that Carter 2 Wayne in both content and delivery. The same people in the club who rap his verses to “Ballin” and “Rollin” WORD FOR WORD!
The same people who laud Jigga Man for his accomplishments, dismiss Wayne’s without a second breath. The same people who say yeah Jigga got more #1 Billboard albums than Elvis, diss Wayne when he wins multiple Billboard Awards and captures the most Hot 100 singles of all time (67)! When Carter IV dropped last August people called it garbage, ass, shit, etc. despite 11 of the albums songs appearing on the Hot 100 simultaneously. WHICH MEANS they are being requested at radio which the fans have control over. Laymens terms PEOPLE LIKED THEM. Â Lets put this into proper perspective, ONE MAN was responsible for 11% of a music chart that covers all genres and artists. Impressive feat? Not to niggas in Philly, NJ or the 5 boroughs. A milli in a week? Only means something if The Throne does it (which they didnt)! Why not? Baby bought half of em! So lets do some quick math:
500,000 units x $14.99 (deluxe edition) =
$7,495,000 of “Baby Money” in one week used to make a splash on the charts. Thats good business right? NO! Its moronic and so is the thought process behind it.
Like it or not Wayne was and is an elite level MC. He possesses ALL the qualities that place one on the list:
- Lyrics (Mixtape Monster)
- Content (Mirror, How To Love, HYFR recently)
- Impact/Influence (Top grossing tours nationally/internationally, Branding YMCMB, Trukfit with Zumiez and shoe with Supra)
- Earnings (Forbes Top 5 mainstay & recent 4 album $150M deal)
- Sales (multi-platinum albums and singles)
- Consistency (Chart presence, 1-2 projects per 18 months)
- Peer respect (Only MC on Eminem’s Recovery, feature king, Jay-Z verse on Mr. Carter)
Only 3 other living rappers can lay claim to this: Jay-Z (Greatest Ever), Eminem (Best Rapper Alive) and Kanye West. With TI (inconsistency), Drake (only 2 albums) and Ross (weak fan base and subject matter) being the other closest to being added to the list.
I say all this to say Wayne detractors look at his glass as 3/4 empty from the rip. When talkin about Wayne the convo usually goes like this “Carter IV was ass I only like John, 6’7″, How To Love, How To Hate, So Special, She Will, and Mirror” not realizing they just named HALF THE FUCKING ALBUM! The moral of the story is this, If you genuinely don’t fuck with an artist, ANY ARTIST, then really don’t fuck with them, but have your OWN REASONS WHY and don’t be apart of the peanut gallery who tunes in to hate because its fashionable. You look lame, suspect and uneducated.

Best analysis of Wayne’s career I’ve ever read. I think the only time his career will receive a proper and accurate assessment is when he dies. The whole “best rapper alive” prevents people from being objective when they talk about him. I constantly hear stupid statements like “Wayne is in the same class as Waka Flocka and Souja Boy”, which is blasphemous. I have no problem with people saying Wayne is overrated, because you can make that argument for any artist, especially him. But anyone who says “he can’t rap” have clearly never heard the Sqad Up mixtapes, Lil Weezyana, Carter 1, Carter 2.5, Prefix, etc. I also agree with your opinion on Kanye. As an artist he is untouchable. As a lyricist? Really overrated. I think people confuse being an amazing artist with being a great lyricist. Once again, great analysis. Keep up the good work.
